Highway Safety Awards Recognition

Sponsored by the AAMVA Law Enforcement Discipline

These awards were created by the AAMVA Law Enforcement Discipline and the AAMVA Board of Directors to recognize member jurisdiction efforts to reduce traffic fatalities.

AAMVA Recognizes Highway Safety Accomplishments

The Highway Safety Awards are presented each year at the AAMVA Annual International Conference. Winners of this annual award are determined using the NHTSA Fatal Accident Reporting Systems (FARS). 

Winners

The state with the greatest percentage reduction of highway fatalities involving commercial vehicles:

  • Hawaii (tie) (2005-2006)
  • New Hampshire (tie) (2005-2006)
  • District of Columbia (tie) (2005-2006)
  • Rhode Island (2004-2005)
  • Rhode Island (2003-2004)
  • Utah (2002-2003)
  • Colorado and Hawaii (2001-2002)
  • Massachusetts (2000-2001)
  • South Dakota (1999-2000)

The state with the greatest actual reduction of highway fatalities involving commercial vehicles:

  • California (2005-2006)
  • Florida (2004-2005)
  • Arizona (2003-2004)
  • Ohio (2002-2003)
  • Georgia  (2001-2002)
  • Missouri (2000-2001)

The state with the greatest percentage reduction of highway fatalities not involving a commercial vehicle: 

  • New Hampshire (2005-2006)
  • Alaska (2004-2005)
  • District of Columbia (2003-2004)
  • Colorado (2002-2003)
  • District of Columbia (2001-2002)
  • Utah (2000-2001)

The state with the greatest actual reduction of highway fatalities not involving a commercial vehicle:

The Canadian province or territory with the greatest reduction of highway fatalities:
