AAMVA Turns 75, Celebrates Role in Safety and Security

Arlington, VA—This month Neil Schuster, president and CEO, American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) and Glenn Turner, chair, AAMVA Board of Directors and chief of staff, Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, announced the beginning of a year-long celebration commemorating “75 Year’s of Safety and Security.”

“AAMVA has been around for 75 years designing and recommending sound and consistent practices in motor vehicle administration—practices that have undoubtedly saved the lives of countless motorists,” said Schuster. “But it’s only been in the last seven years or so that AAMVA evolved publicly into a major league player in the highway safety and ID security sectors. So it’s fitting that we should take this time to reflect on some of those past accomplishments that have brought our association to this point in history.”

To help celebrate this milestone and to house “all things related to AAMVA 75,” the association has devoted a special section of its Web site to the 75th Anniversary celebration.

Over the course of the year, a number of activities are planned including the posting of special Web features and white papers that illustrate the AAMVA community’s significant contributions in driver’s licensing, vehicle registration and titling and law enforcement. A special blog category http://blog.aamva.org/categories/75%20Years%20of%20Safety%20and%20Security.aspx

has already been designated for comments from past AAMVA chairs. And in the coming weeks, a guest book will be available for members to share thoughts and photos from their AAMVA experiences.

“I am thrilled that my term as Chair of the AAMVA Board of Directors coincides with this momentous occasion,” said Glenn Turner. “This celebration is a journey that is evolving just as AAMVA has over the last 75 years. AAMVA members should expect a few surprises throughout the year’s celebration. One particular surprise will be revealed at the Annual International Conference in August, 2008 in Orlando, Fla. But if I told you what it was, it wouldn’t be a secret!”

Founded in 1933, AAMVA actively promotes traffic safety and uniformity among North American jurisdictions. Representing chief motor vehicle administrators and law enforcement officials, the association develops uniform programs in driver licensing, vehicle titling/registration and motor carrier services, among others.
