AAMVA Statement on Real ID Rulemaking

The American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA), and its members, state and provincial motor vehicle agencies (DMVs), are eager to undertake a comprehensive and thoughtful analysis of the proposed regulations to implement the REAL ID Act (PL 109-13). And once this careful review is complete, the association, and its members, will file their comments to the docket, which will be available for public review.

Since the Department of Homeland Security began the rulemaking process, the state DMVs--who have been issuing driver’s licenses for over 100 years--engaged DHS in a constructive dialogue and offered DHS common sense and fiscally sound solutions that would save consumers time and money as well as help protect their privacy. And while the state DMVs have long awaited publication of the rules, they are encouraged that DHS came to realize the complexity of the driver’s licensing and ID credentialing process, and committed the time and resources to learning more about a process that impacts some 245 million people in the United States.
