California Official Elected International Chair of Motor Vehicle Administrators Group
Arlington, VA–During its 75th Annual International Conference in Orlando, Fla., the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) unanimously elected George Valverde, director, California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), chair of its International Board of Directors.
“We are honored to have George Valverde as Chair of AAMVA’s Board of Directors,” said AAMVA President and CEO Neil Schuster. “His experience in the pubic sector, both at DMV and in the finance arena, and his command of motor vehicle and law enforcement issues serving as Director of California DMV, will serve AAMVA well in the critical months ahead.”
Valverde has been in public service for more than 30 years, focusing on operations and budget issues. Prior to his DMV appointment, he served as undersecretary of the State and Consumer Services Agency since 2004 and was previously deputy secretary for fiscal operations from 1995 to 2003. George also served at the Department of Finance as an assistant program budget manager in the Capitol Outlay Unit from 1990 to 1995; principal budget analyst from 1985 to 1990; and as a budget analyst from 1981 to 1985.
During the last several years, George has served in numerous leadership roles within AAMVA. The AAMVA International Board of Directors elected Valverde to serve in the office of secretary for 2006-2007 and international vice chair for 2007-2008. In addition to being an executive officer of the International Board of Directors, he also served as president of Region IV, AAMVA.
Over the next year, Valverde will lead state motor vehicle agencies in a collaborative effort with federal agencies and stakeholder groups as they work toward implementing the REAL ID Act. George will also lead the association’s efforts to find a viable solution for a federally-mandated national motor vehicle title network: a key tool in preventing terrorist attacks, and halting vehicle thefts and fraud. Valverde’s term as chair concludes at the 76th AAMVA Annual International Conference in San Diego, Calif., in August 2009.
“George’s willingness to tackle difficult issues and engage in a healthy and productive debate on what matters most to our community will be a great help to AAMVA in the year ahead,” said Schuster.
Founded in 1933, AAMVA actively promotes traffic safety and uniformity among North American jurisdictions. Representing chief motor vehicle administrators and law enforcement officials, the association develops uniform programs in driver licensing, vehicle titling/registration and motor carrier services, among others.
