Indiana motorists aren't driving around in vain.
In fact, the Hoosier state ranks No. 49 nationally in the number of drivers with vanity plates, according to a survey conducted by the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators.
In Indiana, only 47,883 out of 4.9 million registered drivers - less than 1 percent - have vanity plates.
Vanity plates allow the owner to choose a letter and number combination, usually for an additional fee.
With a 16.19 percent vanity plate penetration rate, Virginia was far and away No. 1, and well ahead of the national average of 3.82 percent.
New Hampshire was second, followed by Illinois, Nevada and Montana.
According to the state government website, the Indiana Personalized License Plate Program was implemented in 1977.
