Some Alabama and Auburn fans are taking their rivalry to the streets.
Personalized vehicle license plates have become another way for Crimson Tide and Tigers fans to show support for their favorite team.
With the 72nd Iron Bowl less than a week away - kickoff is 7 p.m. Saturday from Jordan-Hare Stadium at Auburn - the Press-Register asked readers to send photographs of their personalized University of Alabama and Auburn University, or state of Alabama license plates that reflect which team they'll be cheering for during the game.
While Virginia is tops among the number of drivers who have vanity license plates, the state of Alabama ranks 17th nationally, according to rankings provided to The Associated Press by the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators. Most fans who responded to the Press-Register's request show school pride with phrases that support their team.
But for some fans, the rivalry is so fierce they want to drive home their dislike for the opposing school by displaying it on their license plates.
University of Alabama graduate Ray Pappas said he couldn't show how he really feels about Auburn on his license plate.
The Alabama Department of Revenue Motor Vehicle Division would not let him use the phrase "ABRN SUX."
"The DMV lady laughed and said they won't allow it," said Pappas, whose crimson-colored car plays the Alabama fight song and has Alabama's elephant logo embroidered on the leather seats.
The Revenue Department, according to its Web site, does not allow language that could be considered "objectionable" or "offensive" on license plates.
