AAMVA’s member jurisdictions have been grappling with two major foreign reciprocity issues:
- Allowing foreign licensed drivers to operate vehicles in the U.S. and Canada using their home country license, and vice versa; and
- Establishing agreements with other countries that enable citizens of both countries to exchange licenses with minimal testing requirements
The global economy is a major factor in the recent increase in demand for reciprocal license exchanges between countries. Large multinational corporations are relocating members of their executive staff and their families to offices around the world for extended periods. Consequently, the number of countries seeking reciprocity agreements with individual states and provinces will continue to rise.
