On Sept. 9, 2003, the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance heard testimony regarding the homeland security threat from document fraud, identity theft and Social Security Number misuse. AAMVA was invited to address the lack of resources available to state motor vehicle agencies to detect fraudulent documents and prevent the issuance of driver's licenses under aliases. The security implications of this problem and a proposed comprehensive solution was also discussed. The hearing, was entitled "The Alias Among Us: The Homeland Security and Terrorism Threat from Document Fraud, Identity Theft and Social Security Number Misuse," included representatives from the Department of Homeland Security, the Social Security Administration, and the General Accounting Office also have been invited to testify.
A complete listing of the testimonies from panels II and III are listed below. Panel I contained witness testimony from a prisoner who has pleaded guilty to federal fraud charges and federal official involved in a terrorism and document fraud case. For security reasons, this testimony is not available for the public.
