Standards-Accredited Developers

Serving Your Needs

AAMVA has been an accredited developer of an American National Standard since the late 1970s.  The standard, ANSI D20, is a data dictionary for traffic record systems and contains over 500 data elements relating to highway safety, driver licensing, and vehicle registration.

AAMVA  is currently approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to develop and maintain a standard using an option known as the "periodic maintenance" method via a canvass.  The association is given a period of five years since the last approved revision to update and revise the ANSI D20.   AAMVA is allowed to update the ANSI D20 at any point during this five year period, but may not exceed the allotted time.

Accreditation is done through ANSI and is for one of three different methods: organization, committee, or canvass.  For more information please see ANSI’s procedures.
