Effective Jan. 1, 2005, off-road recreational vehicles are no longer included in the 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) system. As a result, manufacturers of off-road vehicles are required to use a new 17-digit Product Identification Number (PIN) instead of a VIN.
SAE has provided a PIN fact sheet to clarify the PIN Program. Rhe PIN program described in this fact sheet does not modify or alter existing registration practices or law.
