Driver Licensing and Control Discipline Driver Fitness Working Group
Goals and Objectives
- To coordinate, conduct and promote activities to better assess driver fitness, including medical conditions and older driver concerns.
- To evaluate best practices for the screening and assessment of functionally impaired drivers.
- To assist national and international projects whose activities have impacts on departments of motor vehicles e.g.:
- National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) review of Medical Advisory Boards
- American Medical Association’s (AMA) Physician’s Guide on Assessing and Counseling Older Drivers
- AAMVA’s GrandDriver implementation
- Other organizations and projects as identified.
- To improve licensing renewal practices that may assist detection of functionally impaired drivers e.g.:
- vision requirements,
- renewal periods and methods (e.g. Web, phone),
- physical and cognitive testing and procedures.
- To evaluate standards for ensuring drivers’ continued fitness to drive, including:
- periodically review functional status of drivers identified as needing monitoring,
- referrals for remediation and/or mobility options,
- restriction(s) of drivers where needed.
