Emerging Technologies: Driving the Future of Motor Vehicle Operations

The following is an excerpt of an article that appeared in the AIC 2006 issue of MOVE magazine. To order a back copy of this issue or to subscribe contact AAMVA at (703) 522-4200.

The future is happening now in motor vehicle operations from coast to coast:

  • Metal images that spring into action by tilting a driver’s license
  • Digital blueprints of faces and fingerprints linked to an individual driver’s record
  • Vehicle histories from cradle to grave—or, more precisely, from the manufacturer’s factory to scrap yard retirement—available with just a few keystrokes and without any paper.

Most importantly, jurisdictions today have unprecedented options as they tap into an ever-expanding pool of technology solutions to meet challenges that evolve with each passing year.

Without much debate, the greatest advantages for technology come in enhancing security, from capturing fraud attempts by customers to boosting the integrity of both government and third-party employees. Other advances deliver automated operations that streamline workflows and enhance customer service. And advances within technology itself are starting to support new bridges both within a state or province as well as across borders.

So, the future frontier is at the front door—and motor vehicle administrators are exploring the right ways to leverage emerging technologies.
