Showing Spirit

AAMVA President & CEO Neil Schuster shows his enthusiasm for the DMV community after his first year on the job. He welcomes your questions at askneil@aamva.org.

NMVTIS Public Access

The Anti Car Theft Act of 1992 prompted the U.S. Department of Transportation to implement a National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) to help protect consumers. NMVTIS is the only service available with real-time, online access. Signed into law on July 2, 1996, the Anti Car Theft Improvement Act amends the 1992 Act, giving the Department of Justice (DOJ) responsibility for the information system. AAMVA has worked closely with DOJ to fully implement the system, and as of June 2008, NMVTIS contains 60 percent of the nation’s vehicle data. The first nationwide consumer access portal will be available for NMVTIS in the fall of 2008, provided by Service Nebraska (the Nebraska DMV’s online service center), and fulfilling the consumer access obligation established by federal law in 1992. In addition, AAMVA and DOJ will accept applications from those interested in providing access to NMVTIS.

Teen Driver Week

Studies show that most teens do not perceive new teen drivers as “inexperienced.” They also do not consider carrying peer passengers a safety risk. As a result of these misconceptions, Congress passed a resolution last year, marking the third week in October National Teen Driver Safety Week—a campaign dedicated to changing the way young drivers think. This year’s National Teen Driver Safety Week is Oct. 19-25, 2008, and AAMVA is lending support to this worthwhile effort. In September, a complete set of download-ready tools will be made available at www.chop.edu/youngdrivers, courtesy of State Farm Insurance Companies® and CHOP. Look for informational Webinars and tools that will help practitioners and organizers plan for National Teen Driver Safety Week.

networking

Drive Safely Work Week

The Network of Employers for Traffic Safety (NETS) celebrates the 12th year of the Drive Safely Work Week campaign, Oct. 6-10, 2008. The campaign dedicates a week to improving the safety and health of the nation’s workforce, by promoting safe driving practices at their place of business. This year’s theme is Take the High Road. Share the Road. It Belongs to Everyone, and encourages motorists to be aware of special needs and considerations of all roadway users. A campaign tool kit is provided at www.trafficsafety.org to help agencies launch a successful Drive Safely Work Week campaign!
