The Buzz on California Cell Phone Laws
The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is reminding drivers that new cell phone laws will go into effect July 1, 2008. With the new laws, drivers under 18 years of age will be prohibited from driving a motor vehicle while using a cell phone, including a hands-free device, and/or a mobile service device (pagers, texting devices, laptops, etc.). Drivers 18 years of age and older will be prohibited from driving a motor vehicle while using a cell phone unless a hands-free device is used. Fines begin at $20 (plus administrative fees) for the first offense, and $50 (plus administrative fees) for each offense after that.
