Massachusetts Sets Up High School Safety Check-Points

In November 2007, Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicle (RMV) inspectors joined local police in setting up high school safety check-points in the second Operation ETC-Every Teen Counts. The RMV launched the first educational stings at south shore high schools in recognition of National Teen Safe Driver week, Oct. 15-20, 2007. In November, enforcement teams targeted 17 high schools in several other regions across the state. Registrar Anne L. Collins said the results of the latest Operation ETC found that 95 percent of teenage drivers complied with junior operator passenger restrictions, but a disturbing number were not wearing seat belts. "I’m encouraged that teen drivers seem to be taking our new zero-tolerance penalties for JOL violations seriously, but it may be more of a challenge to convince them that seat belts do save lives." The RMV plans to hold additional safety checks after the first of the year. Individual results of November’s Operation-Every Teen Counts are available on the Massachusetts RMV Web site. More details about Massachusetts' new Junior Operator License law that took effect Sept. 1, 2007 are also available online.
