U.S. Jurisdiction Data on Motorcycle Safety and Licensing Available
As part of its ongoing effort to assist AAMVA member jurisdictions in enhancing motorcycle safety through effective means such as good licensing and testing practices, the Motorcycle Technical Working Group (MTWG) announces the availability of "Motorcycle Licensing and Safety Survey of the States." The MTWG was formed through a partnership between AAMVA and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Although researchers have identified motorcyclist testing and licensing as a promising means of achieving long-term, cost effective motorcycle crash reduction, there is much work to be done. Motorcycle fatalities increased each year between 1997 (2,216) and 2005 (4,553) with a total increase of 2,437, or 115 percent. AAMVA members are encouraged to use MTWG resources to examine their testing and licensing practices to help reduce motorcycle crashes, injuries and deaths. The MTWG appreciates the assistance of jurisdictions in responding to the survey and also asks members to provide or update data and information when available. For additional information on this project please refer to the MTWG "Project Definition Report" on AAMVA's Web site, or contact the AAMVA Programs Division at (703) 522-4200.
