AAMVA Reaffirms NMVTIS Support, DOJ RFI Looks Forward

On Monday, Dec. 8, 2008, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) released a Request for Information (RFI) on NMVTIS to learn from industry and other interested parties about the modernization, improvement and operation of the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS). DOJ wants to hear from industry and other interested parties (including organizations that represent the interest of states and others) about strategic interest concerning the modernization, improvement and operation of the system.

AAMVA remains committed to NMVTIS and pledges to continue supporting state development and implementation efforts by exploring opportunities for states to meet the requirements of the Anti-Car Theft Act of 1992 in the most efficient ways possible. AAMVA, and its members, the state motor vehicle agencies (DMVs), have a long demonstrated history of both financial and technical support of the nation's only real-time vehicle title history network known as the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System or NMVTIS. But the AAMVA Board of Directors has a fiduciary responsibility to the DMVs. And if AAMVA cannot show a clear path toward operational and financial success for NMVTIS by August 2009, the Board will take immediate steps to advise the U.S. Department of Justice of its intent to terminate our role as the system's operator. AAMVA respects that the federal government must deliver this federally-mandated system to consumers nationwide and has issued an RFI to ensure the efficient transition should the AAMVA Board decide to relinquish its role.

Responses to the RFI are due within 30 days. If you have questions or need additional information, please contact Vivienne Cameron via e-mail or at (703) 908-8261.
