Teens Raise Their Voice for Safe Teen Driving
To support the efforts of teen leaders, help prevent fatal crashes and to promote teen driver safety at this time of increased risk, the National Organizations for Youth Safety (NOYS) sponsored the "Act Out Loud: Raising Voices for Safe Teen Driving" contest, funded by The Allstate Foundation as part of the annual National Youth Traffic Safety Month campaign in May. High schools across the country submitted project proposals which described how they would spread the message about the risks of distracted driving through activism in their school and community. The top 20 teams were selected to implement their project. In May, more than 200,000 online votes were cast, selecting Deer Park High School, in Deer Park, N.Y., as the grand prize winner of $10,000 from The Allstate Foundation.
For their project, a "Distracted Driving Resolution," more than 1,000 members of the Deer Park High School community including students, parents, and teachers learned and performed a dance routine co-written by teachers and students called: "Keep the drive; stay alive!" Through their project efforts, the Deer Park High School Keep the Drive team helped support the Amanda Malloy Scholarship Fund. Ms. Malloy was a fourth grade teacher at John F. Kennedy Intermediate School. She was killed on November 6th, 2008 by a distracted/drugged driver.
