AAMVA, the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA), the jurisdiction of New York, and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) developed a communication "bridge" which enables U.S. and Canadian jurisdictions to exchange driver status data on Commercial vehicle operators interactively.
The bridge is composed of a U.S. jurisdiction (New York) and a Canadian jurisdiction (Quebec), which provide a connection between the U.S. jurisdictions and their Canadian counterparts. Messages with a destination in the other country are routed to the bridge jurisdiction in the originating country. The bridge jurisdiction passes the message to the bridge jurisdiction on the other side of the border. The second bridge jurisdiction then forwards the message using its country's network.
The AAMVAnet/IRE Bridge connects the AAMVAnet U.S. network to the Canadian Interprovincial Record Exchange (IRE) network. New York State acts as the host site for translation services between the two networks. Presently, the electronic exchange of driver information is limited to driver status information only (the 'SG' State-to-State Status).
