A national survey of state motor vehicle officials that apparently was never meant for publication, allegedly shows that Rhode Island officials are concerned about high costs of implementing the federal Real ID Act, according to the Rhode Island Affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union.

…The American Association of Motor Vehicles Administrators said that the survey was never meant for publication and is more than a year old.

"There is a non-published draft floating around that someone got their hands on and decided to publish," said AAMVA spokesman Jason King, in Alexandria, Va. "Nonetheless, the issues raised in the survey are certainly relevant. The state DMVs do have concerns about implementing Real ID."

King said that since the survey collected its initial reactions, the AAMVA, the National Governors Association, a national legislators' group and Homeland Security have begun "working towards solutions."
