Driver Fitness Working Group

Goals and Objectives  

  • To coordinate, conduct and promote activities to better assess driver fitness, including medical conditions and older driver concerns
  • To evaluate best practices for the screening and assessment of functionally impaired drivers
  • To assist national and international projects whose activities have impacts on departments of motor vehicles e.g.:
    • National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) review of Medical Advisory Boards
    • American Medical Association’s (AMA) Physician’s Guide on Assessing and Counseling Older Drivers
    • AAMVA’s GrandDriver implementation
    • Other organizations and projects as identified.
  • To improve licensing renewal practices that may assist detection of functionally impaired drivers e.g.
    • vision requirements
    • renewal periods and methods (e.g. Web, phone)
    • physical and cognitive testing and procedures.
  • To evaluate standards for ensuring drivers’ continued fitness to drive, including:
    • periodically review functional status of drivers identified as needing monitoring
    • referrals for remediation and/or mobility options
    • restriction(s) of drivers where needed.
