Policy Position on Machine Readable Technology

Law enforcement and motor vehicle administrations are encouraged to work together to identify and adopt the most efficient and cost-effective machine-readable technologies on documents issued by jurisdictions for roadside use by law enforcement. Many law enforcement agencies utilize barcode scanners for capturing data to be transferred to various electronic reports (e.g. E-tickets, crash reports, etc.). Machine readable technologies increase accurate data collection, improve timely submission of data, and typically reduce the time necessary during roadside contacts, thereby reducing risk to officers and the public.
