    Staff Sergeant Jesse Sherrill

    Patrol Car Crash

    Staff Sergeant Jesse Sherrill was killed in a vehicle crash on I-95 in Portsmouth.

    He was providing assistance to a work crew that was installing rumble strips on the shoulder of I-95 when his patrol car was struck from behind by a tractor trailer. He was transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

    Sergeant Sherrill had served with the New Hampshire State Police for 19 years.



    Trooper Ted Benda

    Patrol Car Crash

    Trooper Ted Benda succumbed to injuries sustained six days earlier when he was involved in a single-vehicle crash.

    He was responding to assist deputies from the Clayton County Sheriff's Office with a wanted subject when his patrol car left the roadway on Iowa Highway 51. He was flown to Gunderson Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, Wisconsin, where he remained until succumbing to his injuries.

    Trooper Brenda had served with the Iowa State Patrol for five years and had previously served with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation for 11 years. He is survived by his wife, four children, parents, and siblings.



    Master Trooper Adam Gaubert

    Master Trooper Adam Gaubert was shot and killed from ambush in Prairieville.

    The suspect had shot and wounded two of his neighbors in French Settlement before stealing a pickup truck shortly after midnight. The man then drove to his half-sister's home on Dutton Road in Prairieville where he murdered her and wounded her husband. A short time later the man opened fire on a Louisiana State Police trooper who attempted to pull over the truck. The man fled and remained at large throughout the day.

    At some point during the incident, Trooper Gaubert was shot and killed from ambush as he sat in his patrol car. The subject was arrested later in the evening.


    Sergeant Brian Mohl

    Natural Disaster

    Sergeant Brian Mohl drowned after his patrol car was swept off Jacks Bridge Road into the Weekeepeemee River, in Woodbury.

    He was checking water levels in the area during a period of severe rain in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida when his patrol was carried off the roadway. He was able to radio a distress call to dispatchers and a massive search was immediately undertaken. Sergeant Mohl was recovered from the river several hours later and was pronounced dead at Yale New Haven Hospital.

    Sergeant Mohl had served with the Connecticut State Police for 26 years. He is survived by his wife, three children, parents, and five siblings.


    Trooper James Monda

    Trooper James Monda drowned while conducting a training dive in the Great Sacandaga Lake in Northampton, New York. He was working a marine patrol detail on the lake when the incident occurred.

    Trooper Monda had served with the New York State Police for 18 years. He is survived by his fiancée and parents.


    Trooper Lazaro Febles

    Trooper Lazaro Febles died from complications as a result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty. Trooper Febles had served with the Florida Highway Patrol for 12 years. He is survived by his wife and two children.


    Trooper Micah May

    Struck by Fleeing Vehicle

    Trooper Micah May succumbed to injuries sustained the previous day when he was struck by a fleeing vehicle on I-15 while deploying stop sticks.

    Officers with the Nevada Division of Parole and Probation and other troopers had chased the stolen vehicle for approximately 20 miles. Trooper May was deploying stop sticks on I-15 in Las Vegas when he was struck by the vehicle and went through the windshield. The subject was then shot and killed by other troopers as he reached for Trooper May's service weapon.

    Trooper May was flown to University Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries on July 29th, 2021.

    Trooper May had served with the Nevada Highway Patrol for 13 years. He is survived by his wife.


    Sergeant Paul Mooney

    Sergeant Paul Mooney died from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty.

    Sergeant Mooney was a U.S. Army veteran. He had served with the Texas Highway Patrol for 13 years. He is survived by his seven children and six grandchildren.

    Trooper John Harris

    Struck by Semi Tractor 

    Trooper John Harris was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer on State Highway 16 in Madison County. He was making a traffic stop when he was struck by the semi.

    Trooper Harris is survived by his wife, son, and daughter.


    Sergeant John Burright

    Struck by Vehicle

    Sergeant John Burright succumbed to injuries sustained on September 4th, 2001, when he was struck by a vehicle on I-5 near Albany. Senior Trooper Maria Mignano and Police Officer Jason Hoerauf (Albany Police Department), were killed in the same incident while all three were assisting a family whose van had broken down.

    While the three officers were standing on the right side of the van, which was on the right shoulder, a pickup truck struck all three officers. Trooper Mignano and Officer Hoerauf succumbed to their injuries at the scene. Sergeant Burright was flown to a local hospital in extremely critical condition. He suffered critical injuries that caused him to medically retire in early 2002. He remained under continuous medical care until succumbing to complications of his injuries on May 4th, 2021.

    Sergeant Burright had served with the Oregon State Police for 14 years. He is survived by his wife and three sons. In 2016 a street in Salem, Oregon, was named in Sergeant Burright's honor.


    Sergeant James Smith

    Sergeant James Smith was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a subject who had assaulted and disarmed another law enforcement officer during a traffic stop.

    The man then assaulted one of the officers and disarmed him after placing the officer in a chokehold. He was able to get back into his car and fled to his home.

    Responding officers established a perimeter around the home and established an arrest team. When the arrest team entered the home, the man opened fire with a shotgun, striking Sergeant Smith. Other members of the team were able to remove Sergeant Smith from the home. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

    The subject later fired on an Iowa State Patrol tactical team. The man was wounded by return fire, taken into custody, and charged with murder.

    Sergeant Smith had served with the Iowa State Patrol for 27 years. He is survived by his wife and two children

     

    Trooper Chad Walker

    Trooper Chad Walker succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained five days earlier when he was ambushed while stopping to assist what he believed was a disabled vehicle near Mexia, Texas.

    He was travelling on FM 2838 when he observed the vehicle parked on the shoulder. As he pulled behind the vehicle, the driver exited and opened fire with a handgun, shooting through the windshield of the patrol car before it had come to a full stop. Trooper Walker was struck in the head and abdomen.

    Trooper Walker was transported to a local hospital where it was determined he could not survive his wounds. He was kept on life support until his organs were donated.

    Trooper Walker served with the Texas Highway Patrol for six years, with 12 years of prior law enforcement experience. He is survived by his wife, 15-year-old son, twin 7-year-old daughters, and a two-month-old daughter.


    Trooper Joseph Gallagher

    Trooper Joseph Gallagher succumbed to injuries sustained on December 18th, 2017, when he was struck by a vehicle.

    Trooper Gallagher was assisting a motorist on the Long Island Expressway when he was struck by a passing motorist who was distracted by texting.  Trooper Gallagher was seriously injured and died three years later from his injuries.

    Trooper Gallagher served with the New York State Police for seven years. He is survived by his wife and two children.


    Senior Master Trooper Todd Hanneken

    Patrol Vehicle Crash

    Senior Master Trooper Todd Hanneken was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Illinois 10 in Bondville. His patrol vehicle left the roadway before striking a utility pole and tree.

    Trooper Hanneken is survived by his wife, two sons, parents, and brother. His father also served with the Illinois State Police.


    Patrolman Darian Jarrott

    Patrolman Darian Jarrott was shot and killed while conducting a traffic stop on I-10 in Luna County.

    The driver of the vehicle was the subject of an ongoing narcotics investigation. Patrolman Jarrott was assisting members of the United States Homeland Security Investigations when he stopped the vehicle. The man opened fire on Patrolman Jarrott, fatally wounding him, before fleeing in the pickup truck.

    Other officers began pursuing the vehicle along I-10. As the vehicle entered Las Cruces the vehicle struck spike strips and a Las Cruces officer conducted a pursuit immobilization technique, successfully stopping the truck. The subject exited the vehicle and opened fire. The Las Cruces officer and other responding officers returned fire and killed the subject.

    Patrolman Jarrott had served with the New Mexico State Police for 5-1/2 years. He is survived by his expectant wife and three children.
