    Trooper Robert Nagle died as the result of cancer that he developed following his assignment to the search and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center site following the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks.

    Trooper Nagle was a New Jersey Air National Guard veteran. He had served with the New Jersey State Police and the former New Jersey Marine Police for a total of 34 years. He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, sister, and brother.

    Trooper Kevin Conner was shot and killed while conducting a traffic stop on U.S. 701 in Columbus County at 12:15 am.

    The subject opened fire on Trooper Conner as he was approaching the stopped vehicle, fatally wounding him. The man fled but was located near Fair Bluff. He lead officers on a pursuit until his vehicle became disabled on railroad tracks in the town. He then fled on foot but was located and taken into custody at 4:00 am.

    Trooper Conner had served with the North Carolina Highway Patrol for 11 years. He is survived by his wife.

    Officer Kirk Griess was struck and killed by a vehicle while conducting a traffic stop on I-80 in Solano.

    Another vehicle entered the area and struck both Officer Griess and the vehicle he had stopped. Officer Griess and the driver of the stopped car were both killed.

    Officer Griess was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and had served with the California Highway Patrol for 19 years. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, and son.

    Trooper Tyler Edenhofer was shot and killed after he and several officers responded to reports of a subject throwing objects at vehicles on I-10 in Goodyear.

    Three Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers and two Goodyear Police Department officers responded to the scene and attempted to take the subject into custody. The man resisted arrested, was able to obtain one of the officers' duty weapons during the struggle and opened fire, killing Trooper Edenhofer.

    Trooper Edenhofer had graduated from the academy only three months earlier and was still in field training at the time of the incident.

    Trooper Nicholas Clark was shot and killed when he and other officers responded to a suicidal subject in Erwin, New York.

    He had responded to the residence after the man's wife called 911 and reported that he was suicidal and possibly armed. Crisis negotiators were attempting to make contact with the subject when he opened fire, fatally wounding Trooper Clark. The subject was found deceased a short time later suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

    Trooper Clark had served with the New York State Police for just under three years. He is survived by his parents and brother.

    Sergeant Charles Salaway died as a result of cancer that he developed after inhaling toxic materials as he participated in the rescue and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center site following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.  Sergeant Salaway had responded to the World Trade Center immediately following the attacks to search for possible survivors.

    Trooper First Class Walter Greene died from illnesses he contracted while inhaling toxic materials as he participated in the rescue and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center site following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

    Trooper Greene and his canine, along with other members of the Connecticut State Police's search and rescue team, had responded to the World Trade Center immediately following the attacks to search for possible survivors.

    Trooper Greene was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Connecticut State Police for 28 years.

    Trooper Samuel Bullard was killed in a vehicle crash while involved in a pursuit on I-77.

    He and another trooper were conducting a checkpoint when a black BMW sped through and refused to stop. When the lead trooper no longer saw Trooper Bullard behind him, he broke off the pursuit and turned around. Trooper Bullard's vehicle was located at a bridge abutment fully engulfed in flames.

    The driver of the pursued vehicle was identified and charged with murder, felony eluding, and driving on a revoked license.

    Trooper Bullard is survived by his fiancée, parents, brother, and sister.

    Trooper Kevin Miller was killed in a vehicle crash on eastbound I-84, in Tolland. His patrol car and a tractor-trailer collided at approximately 12:30 pm.

    Trooper Miller had served with the Connecticut State Police for 18 years.
