On March 1st, 2023, Colonel Jonathan Archer was appointed by Alabama Law Enforcement Agency's (ALEA’s) Secretary of Law Enforcement, Hal Taylor, to be the Director of the ALEA Department of Public Safety. A native of Mobile, Colonel Archer graduated from the University of South Alabama in 2002 with a Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice and a Master’s in Public Administration. He attended and graduated from the FBI's prestigious National Academy, Session #265.
His career in law enforcement began over 20 years ago, when he joined the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Marine Police Division and was assigned to the Baldwin County/Orange Beach Search and Rescue Unit. Colonel Archer has become a valued asset to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) since its consolidation. He previously served as the Chief of the Agency's Driver License Division. Prior to that role, he held various leadership positions throughout ALEA, including Marine Patrol Training Coordinator, Law Enforcement Special Response Unit Commander, and Commander of both the Central and Southern Districts of the Marine Patrol Division.
A resident of Prattville, Alabama, Colonel Archer has been happily married to his wife, Catherine, for 24 years. They have one daughter, Lillian, who will begin her studies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) this fall.
