John Newland

John Newland serves as Program Manager for Driver Testing and Examiner Training at the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA), where he supports jurisdictions nationwide through program development, training delivery, and the advancement of commercial driver license (CDL) testing and examiner standards.

Mr. Newland began his professional career in law enforcement, where he served in a broad range of specialized assignments including the D.A.R.E. Program, Traffic Unit, Traffic Homicide Unit, Public Information Office, and Patrol Operations. This foundation gave him deep expertise in traffic safety, public communication, investigations, and community outreach.

Following his retirement from law enforcement, Mr. Newland transitioned into executive leadership in the private sector, serving as a Director for several Chick-fil-A locations. In this role, he honed his skills in leadership development, team management, and operational excellence — competencies that would prove essential throughout the next chapter of his career.

Mr. Newland entered the commercial driver licensing field with the State of Florida, serving as a CDL Compliance Officer. In that capacity, he conducted audits of CDL facilities and Third-Party Testers, ensured compliance with state and federal regulations, and led training initiatives for examiners and staff. His expertise in compliance and instruction earned him a place on the AAMVA Train-the-Trainer team in 2018, through which he has since trained hundreds of state employees across the United States.

Prior to joining AAMVA, Mr. Newland managed an Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) and Testing school for Pike Electric, further deepening his experience in commercial driver education and workforce development. Today, he brings this comprehensive background to bear in his work at AAMVA, serving as a trusted resource and advocating for high standards in driver testing and examiner training across North America.
