AAMVA supports alternative license plate technologies as long as they conform to the AAMVA License Plate Standard, Edition 3 (unless otherwise noted within the Standard). Adoption of digital license plates should not be a precursor to removal of the front license plate requirement in those jurisdictions that require two (front and rear) license plates. Jurisdictions requiring two license plates, but allowing display of a rear electronic license plate, should require a license plate that meets the AAMVA License Plate Standard be displayed on the front of the vehicle.
