AAMVA Attends NHTSA National AV Safety Forum

3/17/2026

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) hosted the National AV Safety Forum at the Department of Transportation (DOT) Headquarters in Washington, DC, on March 10, 2026. Members of AAMVA’s Government Affairs team represented the organization and its membership at the forum. The event opened with keynote remarks by DOT Secretary Sean Duffy (pictured) and NHTSA Administrator Jonathan Morrison and featured industry panelists discussing mass deployment of automated driving system (ADS-) equipped vehicles, safety performance and crash risk metrics, and remote assistance. NHTSA announced future potential actions to occur in the coming year, including the opening of a public comment period related to ZOOX exemptions for certain federal motor vehicles safety standards (FMVSSs) for its ADS-equipped vehicles (which opened in the Federal Register on March 11, 2026), updates to FMVSSs as they relate to ADS-equipped vehicles, and updates to federal ADS guidance documents.
