AAMVA’s Director of Vehicle Programs, Paul Steier, and AAMVA’s Director of Government Affairs, Cian Cashin, attended a Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) Automated Driving System (ADS) Demonstration Event in Arlington, VA on November 2, 2023. The event showcased the work of VTTI under a Federal Highway Administration award to demonstrate how a Level 4 ADS can effectively interact with public safety professionals. As the technical lead, VTTI automated a Ford F-150 with a variety of features and functionalities that allow it to operate as a Level 4 automated driving system in a limited operational design domain. The vehicle is used to demonstrate how technologies can be applied to solve these challenging interactions with public safety. The demonstration provided insight into how a Level 4 ADS might interact safely in challenging scenarios, such as:

• A law enforcement traffic stop
• Response to manual traffic control
• Cooperative driving automation
• Navigating temporary work zones
• Reactions to emergency vehicles
• Fleet management support
